Dear Pharmacist: Deciding on Organic Vs. Pesticide-Treated Foods
Posted on: Tuesday, 20 September 2005, 12:00 CDT
Question: I know this isn't pharmacy-related, but I trust your guidance and you know a lot. Are fruits and vegetables that are grown "organic" better than regular produce? -- E.G., Seattle
Answer: It depends on whom you ask. Pesticides have been linked to Parkinson's disease, so organic foods appear to be a healthier choice. The Journal of the American Medical Association has published numerous articles about pesticides, and doctors have provided compelling evidence at meetings of the American Academy of Neurology regarding the dangers of pesticides and insecticides in our food crop.
But feeding an overpopulated earth presents problems to agriculture, which has taken to genetically modifying our foods. There is so much debate regarding our food supply and how to best feed people and make a profit doing it that the question of organic vs. with pesticides) becomes blurry.
So let's delve deeper. There is evidence to prove that the human body has an energetic frequency and resonates just like everything else on the planet. Organically grown foods emit measurably higher frequencies, so you might say they "add some life" to you. Foods that are sprayed with or grown in soils containing toxic, synthetic chemicals seem to have lower energy frequencies, generally speaking.
Holistic researchers believe that the human body reacts to pesticides in the same manner it does to other foreign chemicals and becomes ill or allergic. Gardeners, farmers and adults who played in the spray from pesticide trucks when they were kids are more prone to Parkinson's or other neurological illness -- at rates higher than the general population. Pesticides and newer biocides (which kill everything in their path, including fungi, bacteria, insects, birds and animals) get into our foods through the root system.
Biocides may have their place in industry, but when we eat them, we may be unwittingly integrating harmful toxins into our very DNA.
Working off this premise, some people think that foods grown in biocide-treated soil carry an energetic imprint of death. Remember, biocides are stronger than insecticides, pesticides and rodenticides.
More food for thought: Some people actually avoid eating meat so as to avoid incorporating the genetic 'blueprint' of that animal's horror and death. A stretch? Perhaps, but for many it is a steadfast belief.
As to organic vs. pesticide-treated foods, I think, finally, it is a personal decision that should be based on what you and your family think best for your health and well-being.
Did you know? A new study shows that the long-term benefits of eating olive oil include relief from pain and inflammation in a manner strikingly similar to ibuprofen, without the drug's side effects.
