AVOX Systems Plans to Cut 30 Jobs

Sep. 19--AVOX Systems expects to cut about 30 jobs at its Lancaster plant later this year as it drops some operations, according to a letter sent to employees.
The company, formerly known as Scott Aviation, told workers it would end rubber mold operations and eliminate many of its machine shop operations at the site.
AVOX Systems said it would end production in the plant's rubber mold operation in the fourth quarter. The company's machine shop will decrease production over a 18-month period, starting in the fourth quarter, the letter said.
France's Zodiac Group changed Scott Aviation's name last year, after it acquired the maker of aircraft oxygen systems from Tyco International. Tyco kept the Scott name for a North Carolina unit that makes breathing gear for firefighters.
Russ Kamis, AVOX Systems' chief executive officer, could not be reached to comment Friday. A representative of a union representing plant workers also could not be reached.
At the time of Scott Aviation's name change last year, the Lancaster operation had about 350 employees.
The company outlined the restructuring in a letter from a human resources official distributed several weeks ago. The company cited several reasons for the reductions, including concentrating on new product development and the cost savings of having some parts produced elsewhere.
AVOX Systems was also faced with replacing rubber mold presses that are in a "state of disrepair," it said.
AVOX Systems said a "limited number" of jobs would remain in the machine shop to support new product development. The discontinued rubber mold operation and machine shop production will be outsourced, the letter said.
Displaced workers will be offered an "enhanced severance package" including professional outplacement help, the company said.
