UQM Technologies Receives Order for Additional Electric Power Generators From DRS Technologies for U.S. Army Hybrid Electric HMMWVs

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 September 2005, 09:00 CDT

FREDERICK, Colo., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- UQM Technologies, Inc. , a developer of alternative energy technologies, announced today that it has received an order for additional UQM(R) permanent magnet generators from DRS Technologies, Inc. for use in technology demonstration hybrid electric High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs). A single 100 kW UQM(R) generator is spun by the vehicle's diesel engine and provides electric power to both propel the hybrid electric HMMWV as well as to meet on-board and stationary electric power requirements.

The hybrid electric HMMWVs are being developed by DRS Technologies and incorporate DRS's energy management electronic systems. In addition to the 100 kW UQM(R) generator, the hybrid electric HMMWVs incorporate two 100 kW UQM(R) propulsion motors, one per axle. Each UQM(R) motor or generator is controlled by a UQM(R) electronic inverter, which manages the operating characteristics of the motor or generator. These vehicles feature electric power generation capability sufficient to power on-board electrically-based weapons, as well as to operate field hospitals, telecommunications centers, auxiliary radar equipment and the like. They have demonstrated fuel efficiency improvements in excess of 30 percent, depending on the vehicle driving cycle.

William G. Rankin, UQM Technologies' President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "This order for additional hybrid electric HMMWV hardware is representative of a continuing interest in the development and evaluation of hybrid electric military vehicles powered by UQM(R) propulsion systems. The military is recognizing the benefits of hybrid electric propulsion, including improved vehicle performance, stealth operation, reduced fuel consumption and the availability of significant on-board electric power. Continuing advancements in our technology and orders, such as that announced today, move us closer to what we expect will be a growing demand from various military organizations for vehicles powered by UQM(R) propulsion systems."
