Foundation Coal Holdings, Inc. (NYSE:FCL) Seventeen years, 34 million tons of coal, 8200 acres of reclaimed land and multiple awards later, Foundation Coal's affiliate, Delta Mine Holding Company has been awarded with a top honor bearing national acclaim for its post mine reclamation efforts. The high distinction was granted by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) for Excellence in Surface Coal Mining Reclamation. The award was presented on September 20, 2005 in Washington, D.C. at the annual OSM and BLM awards dinner. The ceremony was attended by senior personnel from the Department of Interior (DOI), National Mining Association (NMA) and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Jeff Jarrett, director, OSM presided over the award presentations for coal mining operations.
OSM's annual award is presented to mining companies for achieving the most exemplary mining and reclamation in the country and recognizes on-the-ground achievement of the surface mining laws. The award highlights the third time Delta has received an award this year for its remarkable achievement in post-mine reclamation at its Illinois basin Delta Mine. The award selection panel includes regulatory officials from multiple federal agencies and recognizes the company that exemplifies excellence in regulatory compliance, contemporary reclamation, drainage control, reclamation success and innovation. According to Jeff Jarrett, OSM director, "The entire awards program is designed to highlight and recognize outstanding reclamation methods and techniques - efforts that go well beyond what is required for operators who work under the surface mining law. Foundation Coal's Delta Mine represents exemplary reclamation that integrates cropland with forestry, lakes, wetlands and wildlife habitat. This is reclamation that will result in viable long-term land use for a rural community."
Jeff Mueller, vice president of Delta Mine Holdings Company, added, "This award represents the company's strong commitment to environmental stewardship. It is truly an honor to be recognized as a step above the peer group by a panel of federal regulators representing multiple agencies."
