Edison International (NYSE:EIX) today announced that Edison Mission Group Inc. (EMG), through one of its project subsidiaries, has entered into an agreement to acquire a 120-megawatt(a) (MW) wind project in eastern New Mexico from Padoma Windpower, LLC, a leading California-based, wind generation developer. The electricity produced by the San Juan Mesa Wind Energy Project, being constructed by Mitsubishi and Padoma, will be sold to Southwestern Public Service, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
"As the nation's leading retail provider of renewable energy, Edison International is committed to developing new, environmentally sensitive energy technologies to meet the growing demand for electricity throughout the U.S.," said EIX Chairman John Bryson. "The San Juan Mesa project will provide the people of New Mexico with a valuable new source of environmentally friendly electricity at a time of rising fossil-fuel costs."
The project will include 120 turbines, 220 feet high, each capable of generating approximately one MW of electricity. Project construction, which began earlier this year, is approximately 50% complete and expected to be finished by the end of 2005. Project acquisition is subject to completion of construction and other closing conditions.
The acquisition brings EMG's national wind portfolio to 316 MW, enough to power more than 200,000 homes.
