COSTA - About 180,000 gallons of blackwater spilled into a tributary of the Little Coal River on Thursday as a coal company was pumping water out of an underground mine.
The state Department of Environmental Protection issued an imminent harm cessation order to Loadout LLC after the mixture of coal slurry and mine water spilled into Fork Creek near Costa. The order requires Loadout to shut down the pumping operation until the spill has been cleaned up, DEP spokeswoman Jessica Greathouse said.
Greathouse said the DEP is investigating the spill.
