Council bosses say their environmental campaign is winning the war on litterbugs.
South Tyneside Council's Do Your Bit! campaign is cleaning up the borough's environment with local people playing their part.
Environmental surveys reveal nine out of 10 streets and open spaces are almost free of litter and graffiti.
The figures, which have been verified by ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns), show in the last year the number of untidy streets has fallen by almost two-thirds.
It shows the campaign, which encourages residents to improve the environment, is working.
Coun Jim Sewell, lead member for environment, said: "I am delighted there has been a vast cut in litter but it must be our aim to wipe it out altogether."
