Save Our Species Alliance Urges Michigan Delegation to Support Species Recovery Act

Posted on: Tuesday, 27 September 2005, 15:00 CDT

GOLDEN, Colo., Sept. 27 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Save Our Species Alliance (SOSA) urged the Michigan Congressional delegation today to support TESRA, the Threatened and Endangered Species Recovery Act of 2005. The bill, likely to be considered by the House of Representatives this week, will update the 31 year-old species conservation law.

"After over three decades of implementation the Endangered Species Act (ESA) has recovered 10 of roughly 1300 listed species nationwide," said Tim Wigley, Director of SOSA. "The current law is just not working. TESRA is an innovative approach with bipartisan support that will turn the conflict under ESA into cooperation and refocus the law on actually recovering species. We can and must do better."

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service more than 75 percent of the species listed in Michigan have achieved less than half of their recovery goals. The ESA has been sidetracked from its goal of recovering species and is increasingly driven by litigation and court actions, not science. In Michigan, data errors have lead to inaccurate "status" determinations for a quarter of all the species listed statewide.

TESRA will fix the ESA by focusing the law on species recovery, providing incentives to property owners to aid species recovery, strengthening scientific standards and creating bigger roles for state and local governments.

The Save Our Species Alliance (SOSA) urges the following Representatives to vote "yes" on TESRA: Bart Stupak, Peter Hoekstra, Vernon Ehlers, Dave Camp, Dale Kildee, Fred Upton, Joe Schwarz, Michael Rogers, Joseph Knollenberg, Candice Miller, Thaddeus McCotter, Sander Levin, Carolyn Kilpatrick, John Conyers, Jr., and John Dingell.
