10 Things to Do During British Food Fortnight
Posted on: Wednesday, 28 September 2005, 09:00 CDT
1. Look at labels to see where food has come from. If imported, is there a British equivalent in season?
2. Shop in local butchers, greengrocers, farm shops and markets.
3. When in the pub, team a local beer with a local dish for an experience that reflects the character of the area where you live. Ask pub staff to point you to local food onthe menu. 4. Explore food from different regions of Britain as a fun way of experiencing our culture and heritage.
5. Encourage teachers in your children's school to run food- related activities.
6. Cook a British meal for friends - nothing beats old favourites like Cottage Pie or Apple Crumble.
7. Planning a family outing? ? Every weekend there is a food festival in some part of the country.
Visit www.britishfoodfortnight.co.uk or www.regionalfoodanddrink.com for ideas.
8. Pick your own. Visit www.pick-your own.org.uk for a list of fruit farms near you.
9. Grow your own. Potatoes, lettuces, runner beans, herbs, rhubarb and carrots are easy to grow.
10. Celebrate the harvest. British Food Fortnight takes place during the Harvest Festival. You don't need to be a regular church- goer to take part in this celebration of nature.
