Canada's Population Growth 2nd Among G8 Countries Between 1994-2004

OTTAWA (CP) - Statistics Canada says Canada had the second highest rate of population growth among G8 countries between 1994 and 2004, just behind the United States.
But while U.S. growth was primarily due to a high rate of natural increase, Canada's population grew mainly because of immigration. The agency says Canada had the highest net international migration rate of any G8 country in that period and its natural increase was exceeded only by the United States.
The United States was the only G8 country with a replacement level of 2.1 children per woman, while Canada's was fourth among G8 countries at 1.5 children per woman.
The agency also says that between July 1 last year and July 1 this year, Canada received 244,600 immigrants, 5,500 more than in the previous year, and more than half of those immigrants chose to live in Ontario.
By July 1 this year the country's population had risen to 32,270,500, up 296,100 from a year earlier.
