New at the Zoo

A pair of Red-fronted Macaws, a species endangered in the wild, have joined Miller Park Zoo’s Tropical America Rain Forest. Why the female bird has lost many of its feathers is a mystery to zookeepers, who are hoping that by providing an appropriate habitat, including enrichment, diet and a proper exhibit, the problem will go away. The birds were treated poorly by a breeder and were rescued by a private out-of-state donor. The macaws are destructive birds and must be caged to avoid damage to plants in

the rain forest. The birds are about 6 years old and can live as long as 50 years.
