Young scientists at Bellbrook Junior High School have won the Governor's Award for Excellence in Youth Science Opportunities for the 2004-05 school year.
This year, only 67 Ohio schools and 197 teachers were selected for the award. All public and private school students, in grades seven to 12, may compete.
This is the ninth consecutive year Bellbrook Junior High earned this honor, and the 15th year for science teacher Cathy St. Pierre, wife of Sugarcreek Local School Superintendent Keith St. Pierre.
To qualify for the award, each school must conduct a local science fair with 20 or more students and have one or more students advance to the district science day.
Bellbrook Junior High's science fair had about 57 participants in seventh and eighth grades and 22 of those students advanced to the West District Science Day at Central State University.
In addition, four students advanced to the State Science Day with success.
Another criteria for the award is student involvement in youth science opportunities beyond the classroom.
For the Bellbrook Junior High scientists, this is an integral focus of the science program. Tech Trek Mobile Unit spent a week at Bellbrook Junior High.
The eighth -grade Kids 'N' Science club had record participation of students who taught science lessons to younger students in the elementary schools and also assisted with the seventhgrade science dissections.
All seventh-grade students participated in the Challenger Learning Center's program "Mission to Mars."
In the National Science League competition, the teams fared well. Two students were selected for the Discovery Young Scientist Award national competition.
Additionally, one student participated in the B-WISER Summer Institute at the College of Wooster in June and one student attended space camp in Alabama.
