EPA Cites Food Flavor Manufacturer for Clean-Air Violations

Posted on: Friday, 30 September 2005, 12:00 CDT

CHICAGO, Sept. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has cited Flavors of North America Inc., now known as FONA International Inc., for alleged clean-air violations at the company's food flavor manufacturing plant at 525 Randy Road, Carol Stream, Ill.

EPA alleges that FONA violated the Illinois plan for implementing the Clean Air Act by building a new emission source and operating it since 1994 without getting state construction and operating permits.

"EPA's mission is to protect public health and the environment," said Regional Administrator Thomas V. Skinner. "We will take whatever steps are needed to ensure compliance with the Clean Air Act."

These are preliminary findings of violations. To resolve them, EPA may issue a compliance order, assess an administrative penalty or bring suit against the company. FONA has 30 days from receipt of the notice to meet with EPA to discuss resolving the allegations.
