EPA Cites Trialco for Clean-Air Violations

CHICAGO, Sept. 30 /U.S. Newswire/ -- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has filed an administrative complaint against Trialco Inc. for alleged clean-air violations at the company's aluminum-recovery plant at 900 E. 14th St., Chicago Heights, Ill. EPA proposed a $165,746 penalty.
EPA alleges that Trialco failed to comply with testing, operating, monitoring, notification, recordkeeping and reporting requirements of the Clean Air Act. Secondary aluminum plants must test for emissions of dioxins and furans, both hazardous air pollutants.
Trialco has 30 days from receipt of the complaint to file an answer and request a hearing. The company may request an informal conference with EPA at any time to discuss resolving the allegations.
There is evidence that dioxins may cause liver damage and probably cause cancer in humans, and furans may cause cancer in humans.
