Oct. 2--World renowned conservationist and researcher Jane Goodall will anchor the seventh annual Distinguished Lecture Series on Oct. 13 at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College.
Goodall is known for her work in studying chimpanzees and their abilities, spending 40 years of her life in the African forest with the primates. She is the 2002 United Nations Messenger of Peace.
Goodall's lecture is titled Reason for Hope and she will talk about conservation issues and ecology awareness and how the public can act on them, said Barry Horn, the university's assistant vice president for development.
"Her message is that that knowledge should compel compassion and interest, which should direct us toward action. That's what her message is about … not only just collecting information … but what do you do with all that information," Horn said.
The lecture and reception will be at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13 in the Lecture Hall of the Science Engineering Technology Building.
Tickets range from $150 to $250 and are going fast, officials said. About four of the $150 tickets were still available as of Friday morning, and 25 of those selling for $250 as well.
Horn expects the event to be sold out by mid-week.
The Distinguished Lecture series is a major fundraiser for the President's Circle, which university officials said helps support projects where funding does not exist, such as educational projects, trips and programs.
A committee selects the speaker who they believe will be good for the community and draw attendance.
Goodall has traveled around the world giving lectures on conservation issues and raising money for the Jane Goodall Institute and encouraging environment awareness among children, according to a UTB press release.
In the release, Cassandra Yturria Wolfe, a member of the Development Board and Co-Chairman of the Distinguished Lecture Series committee, said Goodall is a natural choice for a community that boasts a well-known zoo for its work with endangered species.
"We think the community will be very excited about Dr. Goodall's lecture," said Wolfe. "We always want to get the person who is the best in their field. To bring a woman of her caliber in to share with the community will just be incredible."
Tickets are still available and for information, call the Office of Development at 548-8708.
