Beijing parks to use recycled water in flush toilets

BEIJING, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) — More than 10 parks in Beijing have begun using recycled water in their flush toilets, a move that is designed to cut water consumption by 80 percent at least.

The Summer Palace, the Botanical Garden and the Fragrant Hills are among the first Beijing parks to use a state-of-the-art water recycling technology independently developed by Beijing Minshengyuan Ecological Technology Co., company sources told Xinhua.

The technology is based on a newly developed film bioreactor whose fiberfilm intercepts filth in the flush and subsequent biochemical reaction sterilizes the water to be recycled.

The recycled water can also be used to irrigate public greens, said an official with Beijing Municipal Bureau of Parks and Woods, the agency that manages all parks and public greens in Beijing.

The bureau will extend the water recycling technology to more parks soon.
