ALON® is transparent from the UV–>MWIR, and because of its cubic crystal structure, is transparent in polycrystalline form, but is not birefringent. This is significant as it means that ALON® components can be produced using conventional and versatile ceramic powder processing techniques into complex geometries, and in larger sizes than is possible with sapphire. In addition to its transparency, ALON® combines excellent mechanical, physical, electrical and chemical properties.

ALON® Transparent armor is half the weight and half the thickness of conventional glass transparent armor and provides 50% higher situational awareness in low light (night vision) conditions.
