Power Unit at Nuclear Plant in Central Russia Stopped Due to Malfunction

Power Unit No 3 of the Kalinin nuclear power plant was shut down on 5 October owing to revealed malfunctions, the press release of the Rosenergoatom [Russian Atomic Energy Agency] has said. The release was made available to RIA today.
“There have not been any violations of the radiation level or conditions of safe operation at the Kalinin power plant. The power unit is to be restarted before 12 October 2005,” the press release said.
“The radiation at the plant and in the neighbouring area is normal and does not exceed the background radiation,” the document said.
The power plant is located in the north of Tver Region near the town of Udomlya. It consists of three power units 1,000 MW each. The fourth unit is to be put into operation in 2010.
