Nassau County DA Charges Seven With Violating NY State Environmental Law

Posted on: Thursday, 6 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

By Jeremy Harrell

Using an apparently abandoned site as bait, Nassau County authorities charged seven men Thursday with violating state environmental law.

In what District Attorney Dennis Dillon called an environmental sting operation, investigators from his office and the state Department of Environmental Conservation hired five unlicensed landscape contractors to apply pesticides to an undisclosed property that appeared to be unoccupied.

Seven people from these five companies sprayed the land with chemicals regulated by state law, and they failed to follow state guidelines such as notifying neighbors of the chemical application and posting notification markers on the property, Dillon said. In addition, one of the contractors agreed to haul away 55-gallon drums marked as containing hazardous waste without first obtaining the required $1,000 removal permits, according to Dillon.
