The Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation Promotes ``ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Day''

Posted on: Thursday, 6 October 2005, 12:00 CDT

In an effort to help Colorado save energy and money, the Colorado Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation (OEMC) is encouraging Coloradans to participate in ENERGY STAR Change a Light, Change the World Day, with a pledge to change one light at home to an energy-efficient model.

Energy-efficient light bulbs use two-thirds less energy than standard bulbs and last six to ten times longer. If every household in Colorado acts through this Pledge, the change would save more than $8,884,549 in energy costs, which is the equivalent to taking more than 16,947 cars off the road. Also, each energy efficient light bulb saves 563 pounds of carbon dioxide from being released into the air.

OEMC is promoting this energy-saving campaign by distributing compact fluorescent light bulbs to the leaders of the "Economic Developers Council of Colorado Fall Conference," being held October 5-7, in Keystone, Colorado. OEMC will encourage these county leaders to take the Pledge and share this energy-saving information with others in their county.

"Lighting accounts for nearly 20 percent of the electricity usage," said Drew Bolin, OEMC Director. "Switching to energy-efficient lighting is an immediate way to reduce energy costs and free up money for other needs."

Change a Light, Change the World is a national educational campaign led by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. The campaign encourages Americans to take a simple action to help preserve energy resources and protect the environment by switching to energy-efficient lighting. The campaign is run in partnership with hundreds of retail stores, manufacturers, energy efficiency organizations, and State governments. The campaign takes place each October, during Energy Awareness Month, and around the transition to Daylight Saving Time. Coloradans are urged to take the Pledge at energystar.gov/changealight.
