Chicken Farm Rumor Starts Uproar in Logan

Oct. 5–BLOOMFIELD TWP., LOGAN COUNTY — Rumors of a 200-acre, 6 million chicken megafarm that will stretch between this township and Stokes Twp. close to a major recreational lake have caused an uproar in the community.

The farm would be on Ohio 274 just southwest, or upwind, of Indian Lake, a major state tourist and recreation destination, Indian Lake Chamber of Commerce executive director Pam Miller said. “It’ll affect us all around,” she said. “We all live off tourism.”

William Davis, a retired chemist, businessman and teacher, lives next to the possible site and is leading the fight.

“If they didn’t poop, I wouldn’t care,” said Davis, 66, who held a community forum Tuesday night at Indian Lake Middle School that attracted about 100 residents. “These people are going to have a fight for years if they don’t pull out.”

Township trustees who attended the forum said they will fight any proposal.

“The best thing we can do is get the community together and let them know there is no benefit to this,” said Bloomfield Twp. Trustee John Shroyer. Added fellow Trustee Jim Koewler: “With Indian Lake a stone’s throw away, I wouldn’t consider it a priority for a chicken farm.”
