North East Waste Services Receives Permit Enhancements at Sandy Run Landfill in Bedford County, PA

North East Waste Services, Inc. announced today that the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has issued a permit modification allowing the Company to increase the average daily volume of waste it can accept at its Sandy Run Landfill, located in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, from 300 tons per day to 750 tons per day and increasing the maximum daily volume from 400 tons per day to 1,000 tons per day. These increased tonnage limits will become effective upon completion of certain improvements as specified by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.
The approved application also eliminates all geographic restrictions on the origination of waste that can be accepted at the landfill. To address local residents' concerns about truck traffic, the Company will implement several enhancements, including constructing a deceleration/turning lane at the intersection of state Route 915 and Landfill Road, restricting transfer trailers from using the haul route between 6:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. and between 3:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. to enhance safety while school buses are in operation, and employing a full-time traffic compliance officer to monitor the haul route, conduct trash truck inspections and ensure drivers operate trash trucks safely.
The approved permit also includes modifications to the existing recycling program designed to increase recycling in Bedford, Fulton and Huntington counties. The revised program will allow recycling locations to be better managed and monitored, encouraging greater usage. The program also allows for flexibility in the types of materials to be collected, based on market conditions.
"Obtaining these permit enhancements is consistent with our strategy of strengthening our network of waste transfer and disposal facilities while adhering to high standards of integrity, customer focus and community support," Jim Elitzak, President and Chief Executive Officer and Dave Florance, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer said in a joint statement.
North East Waste Services is a privately held solid waste collection, transportation and disposal company with 200 full time employees and annual revenues of over $100 million. The Company manages over 10,000 tons of waste per day through its operations, which include five landfills (three in Pennsylvania, one in Vermont and one in Massachusetts), five transfer stations (one in Washington D.C., one in Massachusetts and three in Vermont) and collection and long-haul operations located in Vermont, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
