Oil and Gas Production in the Gulf of Mexico Improves Slightly

Oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico improved slightly over the weekend, although the vast majority of production remains offline as a result of hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

About 1.4 million barrels of daily Gulf oil production remains shut in due to the storms, or about 93 percent of the normal 1.5 million barrels of oil produced in the Gulf each day. That’s an improvement over the 98 percent of production shut in last Friday.

Shut-in gas production is 7.5 billion cubic feet per day, or about 75 percent of normal production, and down from 79.4 percent shut in production last Friday. Under normal circumstances, about 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas is produced in the Gulf each day.

At least 399 of the 819 manned drilling platforms and 24 of the 134 rigs operating in the Gulf remain evacuated.
