Florida Department of Environmental Protection Provides Regulatory Acceptance for Adventus Americas Remediation Technologies

Posted on: Monday, 10 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Adventus Americas Inc. (AAI), has announced that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has accepted their EHC(TM) technologies for in situ and ex situ remediation of contaminated groundwater and soil. These include:

EHC(TM)for In Situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR): A solid or liquid, controlled-release carbon source plus zero-valent iron (or other metals) for accelerated anaerobic biogeochemical reduction of chlorinated hydrocarbons, or pesticides and other relevant contaminants without the accumulation of problematic catabolites. EHC solids are available in the form of pellets, granules or powder that are mixed with water prior to application. Only EHC provides the benefits of ISCR reactions that occur under the correspondingly reduced redox (Eh less than 500 mV) conditions. EHC products are easily applied to the subsurface environment; unit prices start at $2 per pound:

-- EHC - solid materials of various size, specially formulated to site specific needs (one material does not apply to all sites and conditions).

-- EHC - L: A fast-release, highly soluble formulation

-- EHC - LB: Similar to EHC - L but contains "nanoscale" zero-valent iron

-- EHC - A: An aqueous form of EHC for direct addition to existing well networks

-- EHC - M: EHC specially formulated for in situ immobilization of metals

EHC-O for enhanced Aerobic Bioremediation: In addition, FDEP has accepted EHC-O as a buffered source of slow-release oxygen and inorganic nutrients that stimulates the indigenous microorganisms at remediation sites to aerobically biodegrade petroleum and other related contaminants. At $4.50 per pound, EHC-O is significantly more efficacious than alternative sources of oxygen release compounds.

Dr. Jim Mueller, president of Adventus Americas Inc., stated, "These proprietary technologies represent some of the latest innovations in applied environmental biotechnology. Our clients have readily introduced various EHC materials into subsurface environments using a number of methods to create a permeable reactive barrier and/or to mitigate sources. For example, EHC has been added into an open excavation pit, injected via direct-push tooling, hydraulic fracturing, pneumatic fracturing and injection, high pressure jetting and/or mechanical soil mixing. Many engineers and scientists have now completed independent, third party comparative analyses of EHC technologies versus seemingly similar market alternatives and they have all concluded that EHC offers the best performance and value. As the list of successful remedial actions employing EHC rapidly expands we expect that these technologies will be used on an increasing scale to remediate and protect precious water resources in Florida, and elsewhere around the globe."

Florida DEPs groundwater and underground injection control regulations apply to these EHC products when they are used for the in situ remediation of groundwater, or the in situ remediation of soil from which the chemical constituents of the products could leach into the underlying groundwater. The DEP recognizes these EHC products as viable means by which to remediate contaminated sites in Florida.

About the Florida Department of Environmental Protection

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is the lead agency in state government for environmental management and stewardship. The department administers regulatory programs and issues permits for air, water and waste management. It oversees the State's land and water conservation program, Florida Forever, and manages the nationally award-winning Florida Park Service. The department is the main architect of the $7.8 billion funding and management plan to restore America's Everglades - the largest water restoration project in the history of the world. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection is one of fifteen state government agencies under the executive branch of the Governor. The agency has 3,000 full-time employees working in its capital offices, two state-of-the-art laboratories and six regional offices. For more information, visit www.dep.state.fl.us.

About The Adventus Group

Adventus Americas Inc. (AAI) is an environmental technology company that provides various remediation biotechnologies including those exclusive to our sister companies, Adventus Remediation Technologies (ART) and EnviroMetal Technologies Inc. (ETI). The group's proprietary technologies include DARAMEND(R) and TERRAMEND(TM) for treatment of soil and sediment, AQUAMEND(R) for wastewater, and EHC(TM) technologies and mGCW systems for in situ groundwater treatment. ETI is the world leader in applications of permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technology for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, with experience at over 125 sites in United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia. Both EHC and DARAMEND are the subjects of numerous U.S. patents.

The Adventus Group network includes field offices in Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey, and Ontario, Canada, including an expanding network of international licensees.
