Energy's Future Lies in Natural Gas, Says Chevron President John Gass in World Energy Magazine

Natural gas is crucial to diversifying the energy supply, according to Chevron Global Gas president John D. Gass.
"The disruptions caused by hurricanes Katrina and Rita emphasize in very stark terms why diversifying the energy supply is critically important," says Gass in an article in the new World Energy magazine. The future of the energy industry, he says, "can be summed up in two words: natural gas."
The natural gas industry is now at a "tipping point" in its evolution, he says, as it transitions from a collection of independent projects to a global commodity market: "one in which gas can be more effectively developed, transported and marketed so that its economic value is fully realized."
Asserting that "we must build an infrastructure that delivers natural gas safely, efficiently and cost-effectively anywhere in the world," he describes in detail how the industry can accomplish this. The nascent global gas business, he concludes, "will redefine the energy industry in the 21st century." The article can be viewed at www.WorldEnergySource.com.
Also in the new issue, ExxonMobil president Rex W. Tillerson reviews the damage wrought by the late-summer hurricanes, the industry's recovery and lessons to be learned. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, says Tillerson, "struck at the very heart of production, refining and supply in the United States."
"Instead of panic," he notes, "what we witnessed in the immediate aftermath was a rapid, market-driven recovery."
"The two natural disasters demonstrated the importance, interdependence and resilience of the global energy industry." Lessons learned here, he writes, must now be applied to another urgent challenge: "meeting the next generation's energy demands."
