Argentina mulls over selling nuclear plant to Venezuela
BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Argentine Foreign Minister Rafael Bielsa said on Monday that Venezuela is interested in acquiring a nuclear reactor and that the eventual sale would be carried out "with responsibility."
"If Venezuela wants to acquire the reactor, we will have to bid and if we win we will sell, with the utmost responsibility," Bielsa was cited by the Clarin daily as saying.
"We've sold reactors to Egypt, Australia, Algeria and Peru," he said.
On Sunday, the newspaper said Venezuela wanted a CAREM-type nuclear plant in the Orinoco Petroleum Producing Strip, one of the world's largest crude reserves.
The CAREM project of Argentina's National Atomic Energy Commission is a 25-megawatt nuclear plant on which Argentina has been working for over 20 years.
Argentina is one of the leading Latin American nations in nuclear power generation.
In May, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced his intention to develop a peaceful-purpose nuclear program, along with countries like Iran, Argentina and Brazil.
