Greenhouse Gas Technology Center Verifies Aisin Seiki 6 kW Combined Heat and Power Generator Performance

Posted on: Wednesday, 19 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Greenhouse Gas Technology Center (GHG Center) today announced that it has independently verified the performance of the Aisin Seiki G60 6 kW Combined Heat and Power appliance. The G60 is one of a first generation of small co-generation systems that integrate small-scale, gas-fired reciprocating engines with heat recovery in a single appliance. Electric power is synchronized with the grid and converted to operating voltage using an integrated power inverter, with a nominal power output of six kilowatts (kW). Water or water/glycol heating fluid is heated through engine cooling and exhaust heat recovery.

Verification of the G60 was conducted at Hooligan's Bar and Grille, a restaurant in Liverpool, New York, with support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The Aisin Seiki system was installed and is owned and operated, by the primary agent of Aisin Seiki in North America -- ECO Technology Solutions, LLC (ECOTS) USA -- to provide electricity to the facility and provide heat for domestic hot water. During performance testing, 5.3 kW of electric power was generated at full load and heat was recovered as hot water at a rate of 43.6 million Btu per hour. Total combined heat and power energy efficiency was 80.6 percent and the average nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions were 58 parts per million at 15 percent oxygen (02) or 3.2 pounds per megawatt hour.

Emissions from the G60 were compared to those which could have occurred if the restaurant had obtained electrical power and hot water from conventional sources -- grid electricity and an on-site gas-fired boiler. The GHG Center estimated that an average annual emission reduction of 300 pounds (18 percent) for NOX and 4,100 pounds (34 percent) for carbon dioxide (CO2) would occur with use of the G60 when compared to national baseline statistics. A synopsis and final independent performance evaluation report can be accessed at http://www.epa.gov/etv/verifications/vcenter3-17.html.

"The independent verification of the Aisin G60 emissions completes another step toward the commercial sales of the system in the United States," said Kamyar Zadeh, ECOTS vice president. "It was a pleasure working with the Greenhouse Gas Center team of experts."

About the Greenhouse Gas Technology Verification Center (GHG Center)

The GHG Center is a public/private partnership between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Southern Research Institute, operating under the EPA's Environmental Technology Verification (ETV) program. The GHG Center looks for promising greenhouse gas mitigation technologies, subjects them to independent third-party performance testing, and provides performance results to the public free of charge. To date, the GHG Center has verified -- or is in the process of verifying -- more than 30 different technologies that can significantly impact greenhouse gases.

Verifications generally involve the measurement of energy conversion efficiency, air pollution emission rates (e.g., greenhouse gases, criteria pollutants, other pollutants), secondary environmental impacts, electrical power quality, operational availability, cost, payback period, and other variables of interest to purchasers and stakeholders. Technology performance verifications are accomplished using measurement and analysis methods that have been reviewed and approved by independent expert stakeholder panels. http://www.sri-rtp.com/
