[Presenter] Armenia is not going to refuse prospects for the development of nuclear energy, Armenian President Robert Kocharyan has said at an annual meeting of the nuclear energy council.
The meeting, attended by Armenian and foreign experts, discussed issues of operating the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant in the future and ensuring its security. The director of the German Centre for Nuclear Safety, Adolph Birkhofer, who chaired the meeting, said that the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant met European standards and if safety work was continued at the current pace, the closure of the plant would be reconsidered.
[Kocharyan speaking in Russian with Armenian voice-over] We do not intend to refuse nuclear energy. I want to present to you our country's clear-cut position. We told the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, when we were receiving their delegation in July, that it would be beneficial for official Yerevan to replace the nuclear plant's old reactor with a state-of-the-art one. All measures are being currently taken to ensure the safety of the plant.
