Waste Management of Louisiana LLC is laboring to collect household garbage following the devastation resulting from hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The company has already collected more than 638 tons during October.Tim Hawkins, Waste Management vice president for Louisiana and Mississippi, said enormous volumes of household garbage are picked up by his company. But Waste Management does not collect storm debris. The Federal Emergency Management Agency or other contractors are collecting storm debris.
Waste Management is collecting food refuse, diapers, newspapers and other waste produced during the week, according to the agreements with the parishes and municipalities we serve, Hawkins said. Waste Management is not collecting storm debris, which includes rugs, furniture, Sheetrock, wood fencing, tree limbs, bags of clothing, refrigerators, household appliances and roofing materials.
Waste Management collection services updates by area:
* The city of New Orleans asked Waste Management to suspend all residential service until further notice. Waste Management's commercial services in Orleans Parish continue as required.
* All residential collections services in St. Bernard Parish are suspended until further notice.
* Jefferson Parish collections once per week using 53 trucks. Because of the heavy volume of household garbage in Jefferson Parish, some routes may not be completed on the designated day. In those cases, Waste Management will collect any remaining household garbage from the previous day, starting the following morning.
* Westwego residents will have garbage collected each Wednesday.
* Kenner is picked up twice times per week by 1o trucks in areas assigned by city officials. The university section of Kenner between Interstate 10, Lake Ponchartrain and Loyola Avenue was completed Monday. The area between Interstate 10 on the north, the Mississippi River on the south, Williams Boulevard on the east and the Kenner city limits on the west will be worked on today.
* St. Charles Parish picked up once a week by eight trucks.
* Regular household garbage collection services have resumed in Assumption, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Tammany and Tangipahoa parishes.
