Loss of Brazilian rain forest by logging heavier than thought

WASHINGTON, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Loss of trees in the Brazilian rain forest is heavier than thought, as a more detailed satellite observation system has detected more selective logging than the statistics show.

A new study to be published Friday in the journal Science revealed that cuttings of individual trees in difference places in the Brazilian rain forest can clear-cut an area about the size of US Connecticut state each year.

"Selective logging negatively impacts many plants and animals and increases erosion and fires," said the study's lead author Gregory Asner with the Carnegie Institution of Washington and Stanford University.

Researchers also found illegal logging in some protected national reserves, parks and indigenous lands.
