North Korea to Build Power Plant in China

Posted on: Saturday, 22 October 2005, 15:00 CDT

A South Korean company is working with China to build power plants on the mainland.

The BBC reports Kepko, South Korea's largest electricity supplier, is building a 49-megawatt wind power plant in Yumen, Gansu province in western China.

The plant is the first in China to be built by a foreign company and will be up and running within a year.

Kepko is working with Chinese company Datang on the project.

The two are also working on a geothermal power plant that is expected to help the country avoid an energy shortage like last year when blackouts were common.

Both companies will fund the $57.5 million plant along with loans from Chinese banks.
