China Predicts Yangtze River Power Stations to Exceed Generating Targets

Text of report in English by official Chinese news agency Xinhua (New China News Agency)

Yichang, Hubei Province, 23 October: The Three Gorges Power Station and Gezhouba Power Station on the Yangtze River will generate 66bn kWh of electricity by the end of this year, 2bn kWh more than planned, according to China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation (CYRTGPDC).

The two power stations generated 47.782bn kWh by the end of September this year, reaching 72.4 per cent of what was expected.

It is expected that the three gorges power station will generate 50bn kWh of electricity this year alone, while Gezhouba will reach 160 kWh.

The Three Gorges Project has put into operation generators with a combined installed capacity of 9.8m kW, or one tenth of the installed capacity of all Chinese hydropower plants, and Gezhouba is 2.1m kW.

Currently, the project encompasses 14 generating units on the northern bank of the Yangtze River and 12 units on the southern bank, each with an installed capacity of 700,000 kW.

Since the Yangtze River has seen abundant water resources this autumn and three generators have been put into operation ahead of schedule, the two power stations are very likely to generate more electricity than expected this year, company sources said.
