Oct. 23--Duluth-area residents concerned about the health of the Great Lakes are invited to voice their opinions Monday at a public meeting called by the International Joint Commission.
The 7 p.m. session at the Central Hillside Community Recreation Center is one of 14 the IJC is holding around the Great Lakes in both the U.S. and Canada. The sessions are part of a Great Lakes Water Quality Initiative, which is scheduled for review in 2006.
The IJC was created by the U.S. and Canada in 1972 to monitor the environmental health of the Great Lakes and to deal with water-level issues.
While the commission will report residents' views from meetings in Duluth and elsewhere, it has no regulatory or legal power to set environmental rules.
The IJC will conduct a Web dialogue and accept written and oral submissions until Nov. 30. For more information, call (866) 813-0642 or visit www.ijc.org/glconsultations.
