Foremost Branches Out into Soy-Milk Market

Oct. 28--Foremost has diversified for the first time from dairy-related products to soy milk with the expectation of capturing a 10 percent share in the three-billion baht UHT soy-milk market.

Assuming that Thailand's soy-milk market is about the same size as the market of dairy milk, Friesland Foods Foremost (Thailand) Plc yesterday officially launched its Foremost Hi-5 soy milk.

Managing director Ian Gearing said the company was spending 50 million baht promoting its soy-milk products, which are available in 200ml UHT cartons and pasteurised plastic bottles. Both are priced at 9 baht.

According to Mr Gearing, the market value of soy milk is about 5.3 billion baht. UHT soy milk has a 60 percent share, followed by sterilised soy milk in glass bottles at 39 percent and pasteurised soy milk at 1 percent. Last year, the soy-milk market grew 23 percent.

"Different from the milk products that target all family members, we believe that Foremost Hi-5 will be welcomed among our target group of young people aged 20 or over who are health-conscious," said Mr Gearing.

He said that in Thailand's overall healthy beverage market, soy milk was now growing at a rate higher than the milk segment. However, both segments are growing at double-digit rates. Nevertheless, the drinking yoghurt market is now quite stable as consumers have wider choices of healthy beverages.

Foremost is still testing the demand for its pasteurised soy milk, which is currently distributed only through its 800 Foremost Girls direct-sales staff. The other products are available at regular retail stores.

"If the pasteurised milk is well received, we'll expand the distribution through modern trade channels as well," he said.

Foremost claims to be the leader in Thailand's milk market with a 50 percent share, according to Mr Gearing.
