Farm Credit Services Expects Sedate Meeting

Posted on: Friday, 28 October 2005, 00:00 CDT

By Steve Jordon Omaha, Omaha World-Herald, Neb.

Oct. 27--Members of Farm Credit Services of America will hold their annual meeting Tuesday, and it promises to be a quieter affair than last year.

The meeting will be at 1:30 p.m. at the Omaha-based farm lending cooperative's office at 5015 S. 118th Ave. Last year about 140 people attended the meeting, which was held in the ballroom of the Marriott Hotel.

The meeting is part of the process of electing Farm Credit's board of directors. After nominations are made final at the meeting, members of the cooperative will vote by mail over the next few weeks.

Last year, the board had approved selling Farm Credit to Rabobank Group, a Dutch lending cooperative, but then canceled the sale because of delays, cost increases and opposition by some cooperative members.

Opponents of the sale organized a campaign to defeat some of the board members who had favored the sale. Because of the higher-than-usual interest, Farm Credit held the meeting at the hotel, and some incumbents who had favored the sale were defeated.

This year, no organized opposition has surfaced to the five incumbents and five challengers who were nominated through the usual committee process.

Doug Stark, chief executive of Farm Credit, said he expects light attendance. This year's nominees:

-- Jo A. Good of Red Oak, Iowa, and C. Gayl Hopkins of Clarinda, Iowa.

-- Tom Clausen of Armstrong, Iowa, and Dave Nichols of Bridgewater, Iowa.

-- James Carlson of Silver Creek, Neb., and Tim Rowe of Elwood, Neb.

-- Albert Davis and Randy Peters, both of Hyannis, Neb.

-- Lynn Harrell of Miller, S.D., and James Schaefer of Kennebec, S.D.

Good, Clausen, Rowe, Peters and Schaefer are incumbents.
