Evolution, Creation Both Must Be Accepted on Faith

Posted on: Friday, 28 October 2005, 03:00 CDT

Nathan Dean, dean of Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, was paraphrased in the Oct. 9 article "Creationism concerns shadow new top educator" as saying that science is what can be proved through scientific theory and that ideas are tested and confirmed or dismissed. He was quoted as saying: "God is, by nature, not measurable or testable. Science should be taught in a science class. Creationism can be taught in a religious class, not biology."

This is the usual argument when one discusses the origin of life, which has only two possibilities, evolution or special creation. Evolution, as well as creationism, are both in the field of metaphysics, that division of philosophy concerned with the fundamental nature of reality and being, and are unanswerable to scientific observation, analysis or experimentation. The scientific method long has been established as the formation of a hypothesis of a problem, the collection of data through observation and experiment, and the formulation and testing or refuting of the hypothesis. Neither evolution nor creationism fits this scientific method.

Indeed, both rely on faith. The evolutionist must accept by great faith that spontaneous generation of life occurred at least once (which never has been seen in any laboratory in the world), and the creationist accepts by faith that God is responsible for this life. Creationists accept micro-evolution, by which organisms change but not species. The evidence of creation is in accord with all the scientific laws, especially the broad principles of thermodynamics and information theory.

Ultimately, evolution and naturalism are man's attempt to eliminate the need for God, and thereby his rule over us. The obvious complexity and design of creation, however, shows otherwise. God's eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen, so humans really are without excuse to believe otherwise.
