Oct. 28--APPLETON -- Airgas, the country's largest distributor of industrial and specialty gases, is building a new home in the Fox Cities.
Grading and foundation work is going on now for a new 43,686-square-foot facility that will open up next year in Appleton's Northeast Business Park, next to the Gannett Corp.'s production plant, which prints several newspapers, including The Post-Crescent.
"This is a poster child for Airgas," said Mark Schwei, vice president of Consolidated Construction Co., Grand Chute, the site's general contractor. "The building is precast and glass, not just metal. They're setting the stage with a very professional image."
The price tag for the project will fall into the $3.5 million to $4 million range.
The city's Economic Development department said the building at 3400 Executive Drive will include an office area, repair facility and gas cylinder storage. The company paid about $333,000 for the land, or $35,000 per acre, said Jim Van Dyke, city economic development specialist.
Radnor, Pa.-based Airgas provides a range of specialty gases for the medical, construction, food, transportation and mining industries.
The company currently has two other locations in the area -- Airgas presently operates facilities at 2626 W. Wisconsin Ave., Grand Chute, and 1125 W. Tuckaway Lane, Appleton.
