Posted on: Monday, 31 October 2005, 09:00 CST

Steel producers in the Czech Republic discharged nearly 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide more into the air in 2004 than in 2003. According to the Ministry for the Environment, they did not exceed the allowed emission limits, though. Besides, they produced more sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions

. Mittal Steel Ostrava (Ostrava, Czech Republic) produced 3.2 mil tonnes of liquid steel in 2004, the most in the past 15 years. Czech metallurgy companies are an illustrative example of what the OECD draws attention to in its latest report on the state of the environment in the Czech Republic of 2005. According to the OECD, in the past few years the Czech Republic has failed to prevent pollution from increasing parallel with the economic growth. The amount of some pollutants has even been growing.
