Lockwood Greene Awarded EPC Project By Xcel Energy
CH2M HILL Lockwood Greene (www.lg.com) announced Xcel Energy has awarded the firm a project to provide integrated engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) for the High Bridge combined cycle plant in St. Paul, Minnesota, on the banks of the Mississippi River.
“We believe that the Xcel Energy’s concern for the local environment, coupled with Lockwood Greene’s track record of successfully designing and building combined cycle power generating facilities, will be beneficial to the entire community,” said Fred Brune, president & CEO, Lockwood Greene.
“Earlier this year, Xcel Energy kicked off its voluntary Minnesota Metro Emissions Reduction Project (MERP), which includes nearly $1 billion in improvements at three of its Twin Cities plants,” said David Wilks, president of Xcel Energy Supply. “The High Bridge project will increase our St. Paul plant’s generating capacity by 300 megawatts, while reducing air emissions–sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides and particulates–by more than 90 percent.”
Lockwood Greene will execute the engineering and procurement for this project from its power office in Atlanta, Georgia, and will manage construction activities with an on-site construction management staff. More than 400 union craft personnel, as well as other subcontractors, will be hired during the peak of project construction. Construction is expected to begin in Spring 2006, with commercial operation scheduled for May 2008.
Xcel Energy will provide for the demolition and retirement of the existing coal plant near the site for the new power generation facility. Xcel Energy will also provide all site remediation and preparation, and has already procured the combustion turbines and steam turbines for the new plant.
Lockwood Greene was recognized by Power Engineering magazine as the EPC contractor responsible for a “Power Plant of the Year,” for the Pinnacle West Energy Silverhawk Power Station in Las Vegas, Nevada.
