Heritage Oaks Bank Donates $8,000 to SLO County Farmworker Fund

Nov. 3--Heritage Oaks Bank has donated $8,000 to a fund that assists vineyard and farmworkers.

Brian and Johnine Talley, whose family owns Talley Vineyards and Farms, created the Fund for Vineyard and Farmworkers in December 2004. The program, which is funded through the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation, provides grants to organizations that help agricultural workers and their families.

"Heritage Oaks Bank recognizes the importance of agriculture to the economy of this area, and we know that farm and vineyard workers are an essential component of agricultural businesses," said Larry Ward, president and chief executive officer of Heritage Oaks Bank. According to recent statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, more than 60 percent of farmworkers are poor, and few use available social services. Most adult workers are married with children.

Grants from the fund will benefit groups that offer health care, English-as-a-second-language training, and organizations that meet other needs specific to this population.
