Report Shows Boynton Beach Had $100 Million in Storm Damage

Nov. 2–BOYNTON BEACH — Boynton Beach suffered an estimated $100 million in damages during last week’s hurricane, according to a report released by the city Tuesday night.

Most of the damage occurred at homes, about $75 million, the report said. Commercial buildings sustained about $25 million in damages. Public buildings, including three fire stations and the senior center, had an estimated $2 million in damage.

To help with some of the initial costs, the City Commission authorized spending up to $100,000. That money will be used for unforeseen expenses, such as equipment rental, City Manager Kurt Bressner said.

Bressner said he would request more money for city repairs after officials are able to fully assess the damage.

The report said 39 homes, 66 condominium units, 14 mobile homes, 10 commercial buildings and three apartment buildings were severely damaged. Much of the damage was at the Village Royale on the Green retirement complex, which had about 50 units severely damaged, according to the city.

Quintus Greene, city development director, said four Village Royale buildings had to be evacuated. Several buildings there were still being repaired after last year’s hurricanes.

Hurricane Wilma brought winds to the city of up to 118 miles an hour that tore off roofs, snapped power poles and brought down countless trees. It left almost all city residents in the dark.
