Turkish Energy Minister Discusses Gas Pipeline Deal With Greece, Italy

Lecce, 5 November: "Turkey has an important role in European Union's (EU) energy supply security," Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Hilmi Guler said on Friday [4 November].

The activity, which was held on the occasion of the signing of an intergovernmental agreement as regards to a natural gas pipeline between Greece and Italy, ended with a joint news conference of the three ministers.

Guler, Italian Minister of Productive Activities Claudio Scajola and Greek Minister of Development Dhmitrios Siufas attended the joint news conference.

"Turkey's has an extremely important role in EU's energy supply security. The EU itself is aware of the indispensable importance of Turkey as regards to diversification of energy resources," Guler told the news conference. Guler depicted political relations among Turkey, Greece and Italy, as a "chain of friendship". "Turkey is an important ring of this chain," he noted.

Guler said the natural gas pipeline that could be constructed between Greece and Italy will ensure the transport of natural gas in countries around the Caspian Sea to Europe.

"This should not be considered only as a commercial project. This at the same time will contribute to the stability and happiness of the region. It is not possible for the countries to look at the future with hope unless the energy supply is provided," Guler emphasized.

Guler also thanked for the support expended by Italy and Greece towards Turkey's EU membership process.

The joint statement released following the press conference expressed satisfaction over the meeting in which cooperation in energy sector and improvement of projects on pipelines and connection for natural gas.

"The three countries are resolved for completion of the projects related with the natural gas pipelines," the three ministers said in the joint statement, and noted that cooperation and dialogue among the three countries would continue to improve.
