'Ban Plastic Packaging'

A MOVE by the French Assembly to ban all non-biodegradable plastic bags and packaging from 2010 came as a shock to the French and UK plastics industries.
"It wasn't on the radar," said David Tyson, the chief executive of the Packaging & Industrial films Association. "This move is quite astonishing and we cannot believe that it will go ahead." PIFA says a debate on proposed legislation for all farm plastics to be biodegradable switched without consultation with the industry to include all plastic bags and packaging.
If such a ban was proposed in the UK, there would be proper debate between industry and legislators, Tyson said. "I don't see the French ban going forward, but it will open the debate further."
