Chicago Will Host Areas' Largest Gathering of Science Teachers November 10-12

Posted on: Monday, 7 November 2005, 12:00 CST

ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Science education will take center stage November 10-12 when approximately 4,000 science teachers convene in Chicago for the National Science Teachers Association's (NSTA) 2005 Midwestern Area Convention, to be held at the Navy Pier and other local venues.

The convention occurs at a time when science education is receiving national attention. From the teaching of evolution to the nation's reported lack of scientific rigor and uncertain competitive future, the importance of science education is demanding the public's attention. The convention will bring together thousands of teachers to address these and many other important topics.

Hosted in conjunction with the Illinois Science Teachers Association, the 2-1/2 day convention will feature more than 300 hands-on workshops, presentations, sessions, and short courses that will give teachers an invaluable opportunity for professional development.

Teachers will hear from world-renowned scientists and educators, including National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Paul Sereno and Nobel Laureate Leon Lederman; attend workshops on popular topics, including bioterrorism, forensic science, and inquiry; and attend special events on linking science assessment research to effective science teaching and using interactive technology to bring the world into the classroom.

In conjunction with -- and just prior to -- the convention, NSTA will host a special forum for urban science education leaders on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Leaders from the nation's top cities, including Chicago, New York City, San Diego, Philadelphia, Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, Kansas City, Portland, Milwaukee, and others, will convene to discuss common issues, network, and to develop strategies for moving science education forward within urban environments.

When not attending back-to-back sessions and workshops, teachers will flock to NSTA's popular exhibition hall to explore aisles and aisles of state- of-the-art science education products -- from portable planetariums to rockets.

The NSTA Convention begins on Thursday, Nov. 10 at 8 a.m. and will conclude at noon on Saturday, Nov. 12. Special pre-convention events will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 9. Teachers interested in attending the convention can register onsite at the Navy Pier. For more information about the event, go to http://www.nsta.org/conventiondetail&Meeting_Code=2005CHI.

NSTA is the largest professional organization in the world committed to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all.
