Firm Studies Pipeline Expansion Open Houses Set for Public Plan Preview

BREWER - Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline LLC, which ships natural gas through Maine to Massachusetts, is hoping to triple its capacity and is holding regional open house events all next week to allow residents to preview their plans.

Open houses will be held on Monday evening in Eliot and Baileyville, on Tuesday in Brewer and on Wednesday in Winterport. Detailed maps of the proposed pipeline and photos of similar pipelines owned by Maritimes & Northeast will be presented, and company representatives will be on hand during the scheduled open houses.

"It's part of our community outreach," Marylee Hanley, manager of government and public affairs for the company, said Thursday. "We want to be available to answer questions people have about our project."

A video presentation about the project also will be available, she said.

The expansion proposal is referred to as the Maritimes Phase VI Project and would triple the capacity of the company's 850-mile pipeline system built in the late 1990s.

The current Maritimes & Northeast system links natural gas fields off Sable Island, Nova Scotia, to Maine and New Hampshire and connects to a network of natural gas pipes in Massachusetts.

Liquefied natural gas terminals proposed for Saint John, New Brunswick, and near Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia, are driving Maritimes & Northeast to make the expansion, Hanley has said.

The proposed pipeline expansion would include construction of five new compressor stations in Brewer, Searsmont, Westbrook, Eliot and Woodchopping Ridge and add approximately 146 miles of pipe located for the most part next to the current line.

Additional capacity is proposed for compression stations currently operating in Baileyville and Richmond.

Maritimes & Northeast, owned by affiliates of Duke Energy, is in the pre-application process with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which must approve the expansion. If FERC approves the application, construction could begin in 2007.

Open house meetings already have been held in Saco, Westbrook, Searsmont, Windsor, Lisbon Falls and Bowdoinham and were well attended, Hanley said.

Open houses will be held next week as follows:

. Nov. 14 - 5-8 p.m., Eliot Town Hall, and 5-7:30 p.m., Woodland Elementary School in Baileyville.

. Nov. 15 - 5-8 p.m. Brewer Auditorium.

. Nov. 16 - 5-8 p.m., Victoria Grant Civic Center in Winterport.

More information about the proposed pipeline can be found on the company's Web site at www.mnp-usa.com.
