PECO and Community Energy, Inc. Receive 2005 Green Power Leadership Award

Posted on: Monday, 14 November 2005, 15:00 CST

WAYNE, Pa., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- PECO and green power supplier Community Energy, Inc. were recently honored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) for the new green power program, PECO WIND with utility partner, PECO. The award was presented recently at the 10th National Green Power Marketing Conference in Austin, TX.

"We're delighted to see utilities and marketers, like PECO and Community Energy, demonstrate leadership in renewable energy markets with innovative marketing and dedicated green power program development," said Douglas L. Faulkner, acting assistant secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy. "These organizations are leading by example and providing significant support towards new renewable energy power plants across the country.

Since its launch in May 2004, PECO WIND has become one of the largest and fastest growing green power programs in the country. More than 19,000 local households have chosen to purchase PECO WIND, placing it among the top 10 utility green energy programs in the country. The environmental benefit of PECO WIND is the same as planting about 4.6 million trees or not driving more than 58 million miles. The success of the program is due to the overwhelming support for top-value green product - 100 percent Pennsylvania wind energy - with more than 230 businesses behind the product including GlaxoSmithKline, Pennsylvania-American Water, and Aqua America.

"I'm thrilled with the recognition, and more importantly, the success of PECO WIND," said Denis O'Brien, president of PECO. "By offering customers a choice in how their power is generated, we are helping them join us in our ongoing efforts to protect and preserve our neighborhoods and our world.

"The EPA award recognizes environmental excellence and leadership. PECO WIND is the hands-down winner in that category because it offers 100 percent emission-free energy with no fuel risks, all produced here in Pennsylvania," said Brent Alderfer, President and CEO of Community Energy, "That's a future everyone wants to buy into."

Community Energy is one of the only green power marketers that ties renewable energy sales to new energy development. In December, Community Energy will join project partners in dedicating the Jersey Atlantic Wind Farm, the only wind farm in New Jersey and the first coastal wind farm in the U.S. A second Community Energy project will come online in Bear Creek, PA, just before the year's end.

PECO WIND, the first wind energy product offered by a utility in Pennsylvania, is available to PECO's residential and business customers in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Philadelphia and York counties. Supplied by a wind power facility in Waymart, PA, near the Poconos, PECO WIND is offered to residential customers in 100-kilowatt hour (kWh) blocks for an additional monthly fee of about $2.50 per block, added directly to customers' monthly PECO bill. PECO WIND also is available to business customers. For more information about PECO WIND or to sign up, customers can call 1-866-WIND-321, or visit http://www.pecowind.com/.
