Authorities accuse environmental violators in nature reserves
BEIJING, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA) issued a circular Tuesday accusing seven violators who have caused environmental damage in nature reserves through building industrial, tourism and infrastructure projects illegally.
These incidences occurred in seven nature reserves, two in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the rest five in Hunan, Jiangsu, Hainan, Yunnan and Henan provinces, respectively.
According to the circular, environmental departments at different levels have since April combed 2,056 nature reserves across the country and handled a number of environmental cases involving damage to natural resources and environmental pollution.
So far, the authorities have detected 506 violations and forced 158 projects to accept environmental assessment in accordance with law, closed down 260 illegal projects, canceled 10 tourist routes, and punished 66 people.
A SEPA spokesman blamed some localities for negligence in environmental protection in their efforts to develop the local economy, featuring disorders in mining, infrastructure construction, and tourism development.
