Federated Farmers has hit back at criticism by parliamentary commissioner for the environment Morgan Williams of a lack of leadership in urging farmers to be more environmentally sound.
Williams said some farmers were taking up the challenge but that conversations with Federated Farmers' leadership had been "less than valuable".
But dairy section chairman Frank Brenmuhl said the federation had only leapt to the defence of thousands of farmers who had been treated unfairly by Williams' report, Growing For Good.
"As a farmer I see it as a personal attack on me when he says I'm eroding our natural capital," Brenmuhl, a Canterbury dairy farmer, said. "I've spent 20 years enhancing the ability of my farm to produce and in making it better than it was when I took it over. I have not met a farmer yet who does not have the same care and attention for their land."
Tools such as nutrient budgets endorsed by Williams had only been available for the last few years.
