Asia-Europe environmental meeting calls for sustainable development
JAKARTA, Nov. 25 (Xinhua) -- Experts from Asian and European countries ended their three-day meeting here on Friday, recommending 12-actions agenda for the sustainable environmental development.
The compiled set of recommendations for better environment and sustainable development will be submitted to the relevant governments for their review.
"The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is pleased with how the forum has helped to raise awareness and progress of environmental and sustainable development among stakeholders in Asia and Europe," said UNEP's Executive Director Klaus Toefer.
He added that rapid urbanization might be the cause of the many environmental challenges today, but the urban areas were also the key vehicles for reducing poverty and reaching towards UN's Millennium Development Goals.
Asia-Europe cooperation should go two-ways wherein Asia and Europe should mutually exchange lessons out of their past experiences and generate the best workable solution, said the director.
Over 350 experts and high-profile international personalities from Asia and Europe gathered here to discuss environmental issues, the first and the largest multi-stakeholders meeting of its kind.
Launched in 2003, the Asia-Europe Environmental Meeting has been gaining ground as truly unique and effective program that allows for open dialogue on specific environment concern for both Asia and Europe at the non-official level.
