SW China's city eliminates river pollution caused by chemcial plant blast
CHONGQING, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- The river pollution caused by a chemical plant blast in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality has been cleared up, without signs of diffusion, local environmental authorities said Thursday.
The downstream water quality has met the national standards and the ban on fetching river water has been lifted, according to the Chongqing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau.
"Local villagers are now allowed to fetch and use water from the river," an official of the bureau told Xinhua.
The pollution was caused by a blast of a chemical plant in Dianjiang County of Chongqing on Nov. 24. Warnings of benzene contamination were placed along the banks of the Guixi River in the Xinmin Township. The blast killed one person and injured four others.
